Toward directional detection of Dark Matter with the DM-TPC detector

چکیده

Directional detection can provide unambiguous observation of Dark Matter interactions even in presence of insidious backgrounds. The DM-TPC collaboration is developing a detector with the goal of measuring the direction and sense of nuclear recoils produced in Dark Matter interactions. The detector consists of a Time Projection Chamber with optical readout filled with CF4 gas at low pressure. A collision between a WIMP and a gas molecule results in a nuclear recoil of 1-2 mm. The measurement of the energy loss along the recoil allows us to determine the sense and the direction of the recoil. Results from a prototype detector operated in a low-energy neutron beam clearly demonstrate the suitability of this approach to measure directionality. A cubic meter prototype, which is now being designed, will allow us to set competitive limits on spin-dependent Dark Matter interactions using a directional detector.

The DMTPC project

The DMTPC detector is a low-pressure CF4 TPC with optical readout for directional detection of Dark Matter. The combination of the energy and directional tracking information allows for an efficient suppression of all backgrounds. The choice of gas (CF4) makes this detector particularly sensitive to spin-dependent interactions. 1. Directional Dark Matter detection The goal of a directional Dark...

Neutrino Backgrounds to Dark Matter Searches and Directionality Citation

Neutrino-nucleus coherent scattering cross sections can be as large as 10−39 cm, while current dark matter experiments have sensitivities to WIMP coherent scattering cross sections several orders of magnitude smaller. With large target masses and few keV recoil energy detection thresholds, coherent scattering of solar neutrinos becomes an irreducible background. Directional dark matter detectio...

The ArDM project: a Liquid Argon TPC for Dark Matter Detection

WIMPs (Weakly Interacting Massive Particles) are considered the main candidates for Cold Dark Matter. The ArDM experiment aims at measuring signals directly induced by WIMPs in liquid argon. A 1-ton prototype is currently developed with the goal of demonstrating the feasibility and performance of a detector with such a large target mass. ArDM aims at acting as a liquid argon TPC and additionall...

Dark Matter Experiments at Boulby Mine

The Boulby Dark Matter Collaboration (BDMC) is running several experiments for particle (WIMP) dark matter search in the Underground Boulby Laboratory. These include a liquid xenon detector (ZEPLIN I) and a low pressure gas TPC with directional sensitivity (DRIFT I). Next stage double-phase xenon detectors ZEPLIN II and ZEPLIN III, and a new TPC DRIFT II will be installed at Boulby in a few mon...

Directional detection of Dark Matter

Direct detection of WIMPs is key to understand the origin and composition of Dark Matter. Among the many experimental techniques available, those providing directional information have the potential of yielding an unambiguous observation of WIMPs even in the presence of insidious backgrounds. A measurement of the distribution of arrival direction of WIMPs can also discriminate between Galactic ...
